The celebration of Mother's Day can be traced back to the beginning of recorded history. This custom got its start with the ancient Greeks' celebration of the annual spring festival. The ancient Greeks did so in honor of the well-known goddess Rhea, who, according to Greek mythology, was the mother of all the gods and goddesses. Soon after, approximately two hundred and fifty years before the birth of Jesus Christ, the ancient Romans also began to celebrate the spring festivals in honor of the mother goddess Cybele.
Anna Jarvis, a woman who resided in the United States was the person who initiated the commemoration day in 1908 for her deceased mother. This was the beginning of the concept of Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis is a citizen of the United States of America. She was born in 1864, and her primary occupation is teaching. After her father passed away in 1902, Jarvis moved in with her mother in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States, and began working there. On May 9, 1905, roughly three years later, Jarvis was bereaved of the loss of her mother. Even though she never left her mother's side after her father passed away, she believed that she was unable to provide her with the required amount of attention when her mother passed away, and she experienced this absence.
On the second Sunday of May, exactly two years after her mother's funeral, that is, on the anniversary of her mother's passing, Ms. Jarvis hosted a gathering at her house for her close friends and family. In this invitation, she proposed to her close friends the concept of celebrating this day as Mother's Day throughout the country. It was in this manner that the tradition of celebrating Mother's Day first came into existence. After receiving approval from Congress in 1914, Jarvis's idea eventually became a long-standing custom in the United States. The concept proposed by Jarvis was well received, and a prominent clothing merchant in the United States provided generous financial support for these endeavors.
The first Mother's Day celebration was held on the same day, May 10, 1908, at the same church in Grafton, Massachusetts, where Jarvis' mother had been giving weekly religious lectures for the previous twenty years. This celebration included the participation of 407 children along with their mothers. Carnations were Ms. Jarvin's mother's favorite flower, so she gave one to each mother and child in her family. Since then, the white carnation, which stands for nobility, compassion, and patience, has been adopted as the official symbol of Mother's Day in the United States.
The next thing that needs to be done is to get the government to recognize Mother's Day as an official day. Ms. Jarvis is responsible for what is regarded as the single most successful letter-writing campaign in the annals of human history. Jarvis was successful in communicating this concept to anyone she could approach, ranging from the heads of newspapers to businessmen, from politicians to members of the clergy. Her concept was so quickly adopted that unofficial Mother's Day celebrations had already begun in several regions and provinces before the Senate even voted on whether or not to officially recognize the holiday.
In the end, the idea that had been proposed by Jarvis was approved by the Senate on May 8, 1914, and President Wilson put his signature on the document. The second Sunday of May is the one that is traditionally recognized as 'Mother's Day,' and this day is celebrated annually. In a very short amount of time, these celebrations made their way to other countries.
